During the student teaching semester, I have held a number of leadership positions and roles in both my elementary and secondary schools. I can speak to many of these leadership positions, and feel very lucky to have had so many opportunities to be a leader throughout the semester. To begin, I would like to speak about the leadership roles I have held during my time on campus at Kansas State.
As a student at Kansas State, I have held several leadership positions. As a member of Concert Choir, K-States top choral ensemble, I have been a section leader for 4 consecutive semesters and have worked mainly with the Soprano section. As a UChoir conductor, I worked with students who had a variety of backgrounds and experience levels with music. The ensemble worked diligently twice a week and I led rehearsals that varied from sectionals (all sections) to full group rehearsals.
In terms of collaboration, I have worked closely with a number of my colleagues for various projects and assignments in my time. My ensemble is like one giant collaboration, as we all put our heart and soul into each of our performances. I had the opportunity to collaborate with both of my Cooperating Teachers on at least one concert/performance and a number of lessons and assignments.
While at Oxford, I also had the opportunity to be the assistant director for the school musical, Mary Poppins Jr. Here, I worked with the head director, six other assistant directors, four student directors, and a cast and crew of more than two hundred students. I could not be more grateful to have had this opportunity. Though it required considerably more hours, it gave me the opportunity to get to know students better outside the classroom setting and to give back to a program that was giving so much to me. I will be forever grateful for getting to work so closely with a group of such phenomenal people.
At Valley Park Elementary school, I had the opportunity to be a co-den leader with my cooperating teacher and lead lessons for groups of mixed students, K-5. I was also nominated by six different students to be who they considered their “Kindest Kansas Citian.” While not an official leadership position, this tells me that even in four short weeks teachers can positively impact students’ lives more than we may realize.
